Finally... I think I understand Stick Game

After Ryan's demonstration speech on the Native American Stick Game I think I am beginning to understand it.

 Here Blade assisted him.
When he didn't have a drum he used the metal on the desk. He also sang a chant for us.
It was sure fun to watch the sixth graders play boys against girls.
Ryan shared how his ancestors have passed this game down from generation to generation.

A Visit from Vaughn Eaglebear

We had a treat at school yesterday when Vaughn Eaglebear came to perform for the student body. We learned that Vaughn had attended school part of his life in Inchelium. He is a stand up comic and did lots of things that made us laugh. He is also known for writing the song "John Wayne's Teeth" in Smoke Signals. He also had a positive message for all of us at school about what happens if you join gangs, use drugs and alcohol, or drop out of school. Most students loved it when he played his drum and sang. You can learn more about Vaughn Eaglebear here.
One of his favorite sayings is " Love, Peace, and Fry Bread Grease."

My Old Friend

My old friend
and all of the time we spent,
My old friend
Now you are gone.
Nothing is ever the same
as it used to be.
When it was me and you
We used to have our
laughs
and now  it seems over
because you are in
a better place,
With a different race
Now you are dead and
gone and
nothing will ever be
the same and
I love you my old friend.

Testing Time

Last week the middle school began taking our state tests in reading, math, writing and science. Each class does different tests and all will be finished by the middle of next week. Here are some responses heard by students taking tests so far:
" It was easy.... The questions were just what I expected." (Teacher says whew!)
" I took my time and checked over my work on the math test."
"I liked taking it online better. The tools were cool."
"I'm tired! "
I think we will see happy students when the testing is done!

Community Clean Up Day in Inchelium

All the staff and students of our school joined community members to beautify and clean up the community last Friday. It was awesome to see everyone working together to paint, plant flowers, pick up garbage, and beautify our school grounds and community.

The school bus checked on us to see if we needed anything.

When in doubt of the weather dress in layers.
Part of the eighth grade class stopped to rest while the others caught up.

I finally got them all together to pose for a picture.
At the end of the day the whole school gathered to enjoy root beer floats, win prizes, and wait to hear who won the TV. It wasn't any of us. Congrats to Josh Benson though. Above are some sixth and seventh graders posing.

The Day The 7th Graders Went CRAZY

It all started the day Mrs.Woolum brought cookies!! Ok this is really what happened. The 7th and  6th graders were playing football when Roger hiked the ball to James. James was running for a touchdown and James did not make it for  two reasons.
Why he did not make it one reason why is the 6th graders got called to class and the second reason is there was a trail of freshly made cookies heading for the green tower. Ok before I go any farther I am going to tell you the names of the 7th graders. Roger, James,Maraia,Tristan,Steven,Tony,Nathan,Quentin,Charlie,Olyicia,Fabian,Luke,Jovahni,Trissy which is me, and Victoria. Ok, back with the story. The 7th graders followed the trail of cookies into the tower they picked the trail of cookies as they went. When they got into the tower there was a HUGE tub of cookies.I don't know why, but Roger said why is there a tub of cookies in here?  Charlie said," I don,t know, but I will be the judge of that one."
Luke said, "Are you crazy?" She says that she is not crazy. Then the whole class started to eat the cookies. Two hours later all the cookies were gone. All the 7th graders were feeling really crazy.
The Schwan Man had bad timing because all the crazy 7th graders ran outside when they heard the swan man pull up. Every one stood still for 10 seconds then in 17 sceconds they were climbing all over the the Schwan mans truck to get inside for all the sugar. When he walked outside he said, "What in the heck are you doing??"
Right after he said that the 7th graders looked at him and he made a big mistake. He looked in the eyes of Quentin and that triggered off the mean side of Quentin which made all the 7th graders mad. Remember they were still crazy and they all jumped off the Schwan Man's truck and ran over to him and said, " Leave before stuff goes bad." He backed off.
He pretended to walk away and he made a very fast run for the truck. Luckily he made it.
He said, "This is the most craziest school I have ever been to."
From that day on trhe 7th graders have been crazy and the Swan Man would never come back to Inchelium School ever again. by Trissy Loer

Eagles

By: Marissa Lynn McKinney

I lay three or two eggs and it takes about 35 days for them to hatch. Do you know what kind of bird I am yet?

The very first reason I chose this amazing bird is because of the body strength. This animal height is 3 feet head to tail. And the wingspan is 7 feet across. And what really amazed me is the weight because I thought that the weight would be way more then it was. 8 to 12 pounds is the weight of this animal. Now I ‘am going to talk about the wings on this animal’s body. They may go fast as 200 miles per hour. That fact really shocked me because when I see the eagles they are usually just flying around all slow. They look like they are just flying to fly or something. When a bald eagle flap it’s wings most of the power is when the wings stroke down. The wings that pull down are much larger then the ones that stroke up. The flight muscles are so important to eagles that the they often account for the half of the bird’s total body weight. Eagles can change the speed by changing the position of the wings. When an eagle trys to land on a tree it is very hard for them to land on top of a tree. They spread their wings up and then land. Then the feathers are very light. Did you know that if you take 30 feathers it would weight less then a penny? There is many feathers on the birds body almost all the feathers have a different job.

Green feather coverts

Making the wing thicker in front so that the air will flow faster over the wing

Grey feathers

Primary feathers can be spread out like the fingers on a hand to reduce drag

Blue feathers

Secondary feathers can be moved down to increase grag, or up to reduce it

The feather is made out of Keratin the same thing that your fingernail is made out of. That fact really shocked me because it looked nothing like the fingernail. And what you just read is the first reason I chose this bird.

The very second reason I chose this eagle is because of the habitat they live in. You may find them in North America, Canada, and another place is Alaska. But the best place to look for them is Alaska. This animal’s nest is about 2 feet in length and about 5 feet for the width. The eagles nest weights about 50 and up to 100 pounds. When they try to land on their nest it is very hard for them because they have to go in many positions in order for them to land in the tree. The bald eagle is often seen in areas of North America. If it prefers deciduous forest. This bird selects hardwood trees for roosting and also nesting. During breeding season, the bald eagle shifts it location words south from the northern areas of Canada or Alaska. This research of fish for food and this move usually occurs by late October.

The final reason I chose this bird is because struggle for survival. They are fighting for there life. The number of the eagles was rapid decline in the mid 20th century due to loss of habitat. Besides many of the magnificent birds are being shot illegally. These birds are also due to harmful pesticide and the use of DDT. This result in the bird being listed as one of the endangered species. Thus, came enforcement of the environmental laws, which also banned the use of DDT. The numbers of the bald eagles were restored and on the 12th of July 1995, this bird was taken off the list of the endangered species thanks to the conservation efforts.

That is why I chose this amazing bird is because it is strong it is just a amazing creature to be around and also see. This eagles fight for what they want and also for what they need.

fly like an eagle

as lonely eagles fly into the winds on majestic soaring gliding wings
a single scream comes from the sky
come fly with me come here and fly in a eagles cry
my heart yearns to be part
as i feel the beating of it's heart
oh for my soul to be one with this bird flyin so carefree
flying so perfectly in the sky for all to see
his wings in the wind as if caress's his soul
and sours across the streams without a goal
my being troubles with delight of such a sight
a gift like no other watching him soaring so high
inviting me to join him and fly fly away
